The latest CRN South London PPIE events are available on our regional events page.
Our main public engagement event is International Clinical Trials Day, which happens each year on 20 May. Trusts and research organisations across south London celebrate this important awareness day on or around 20 May by inviting patients and members of the public to asks questions and discover more about clinical research.
The annual awareness day marks the work of James Lind who held the first clinical trial in 1747 aboard the HMS Salisbury.
Hungry
In March 2018, we held a screening of the Theatre of Debate film Hungry. The film addresses the social, economic and public health factors around childhood obesity and diabetes.
After the screening there was a lively discussion about what research could do to address the issues raised in the film, and how patient and public involvement could help.
Attendees from a range of backgrounds - including healthcare professionals, people affected by diabetes, researchers and charity sector representatives - discussed the particular needs of young people when addressing the risks of obesity and shared their recommendations for further events on this topic *.
People Are Messy
In June 2017, the CRN South London held a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) open day to explain more about getting involved in research and the Patient Research Ambassador Initiative.
The afternoon included a screening of the film People Are Messy from Theatre of Debate as well as a question and answer session with PPIE representatives and a marketplace of research activities around London.

In 2017 and 2018, the CRN South London worked with King’s Health Partners and the NIHR Guy's and St Thomas' Biomedical Research Centre on summer schools to help explain health research to groups of Year 10 schoolchildren who had applied to take part in the school.
